CIDAC Study

Intraoperative duplex ultrasound is superior to angio
in detecting defects

In the CIDAC (Comparison of Intra-operative Duplex Ultrasound and Angiography after Carotid Endarterectomy) study, a Medistim system with IDUS* was compared to angiography during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in 150 patients.

Intra-operatively obtained videos were evaluated by 3 independent and blinded investigators according to a four step rating scale. The results were published 17 March 2020 in the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

*IDUS: Intraoperative Duplex Ultrasound

Results

• IDUS enables more correct detection of higher grade defects than angiography (P < 0.001).

• IDUS leads to intraoperative revision more frequently than angiography (p=0.04).

• Inter-observer reliability of IDUS is higher than of angiography (p= 0.003).
